Agentic Commerce for UK Shops: Getting Your Store Ready for AI Shopping Agents

If you've read anything about agentic commerce this year, you'd think AI agents were already doing all the shopping. Ask ChatGPT or Gemini for a product and it will happily recommend one. For a UK shop, the question is simpler: what do I actually need to do now, and what can wait?
The honest answer is that most of the buying features are still US-only. But the groundwork that decides whether an agent recommends your products is the same work that already helps you in Google Shopping and search. That's worth doing today.
This guide covers where things really stand, and a practical checklist for Shopify, WooCommerce and OpenCart stores.
What agentic commerce actually means
An AI shopping agent is an assistant that searches, compares and, in some cases, buys on someone's behalf. Instead of a customer browsing ten sites, they ask an assistant and it does the legwork.
For that to work, agents need two things from your store:
- Good data they can read and trust: products, prices, stock, delivery and returns.
- A way to act: add to basket, create a checkout, or hand the customer over to your site to pay.
The big platforms have started publishing standards for both.
Where things stand in October 2026
These details change quickly, so everything below was checked on 16 October 2026.
Google: Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP)
Google launched UCP in January 2026 as an open standard for agentic commerce, covering discovery, checkout and after-sales. It works over APIs, Agent2Agent (A2A) or the Model Context Protocol (MCP). Shopify says it co-developed UCP with Google.
Google's own implementation adds checkout to eligible product listings in AI Mode in Search and the Gemini app. The retailer stays the seller of record. To take part, you need an active Merchant Center account with checkout-eligible products.
UK status: not available yet. Google's documentation says the Merchant Center UCP integration hub is rolling out gradually in the United States, with Australia and Canada next. There's no UK date.
OpenAI and Stripe: Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP)
ACP is an open standard built by OpenAI and Stripe. Its first big use was Instant Checkout, which let US shoppers buy directly inside ChatGPT.
That has changed. In March 2026 OpenAI said the first version of Instant Checkout didn't offer the flexibility it wanted. Its merchant page now says it's moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout, and that purchases are completed on merchants' own websites or apps. ACP currently supports product discovery through shared product feeds, and OpenAI says there are no fees on purchases that start in ChatGPT.
UK status: OpenAI says shopping in ChatGPT is currently live for US users and will expand to other regions over time.
Shopify: Agentic Storefronts
Shopify's Agentic Storefronts is a sales channel that sends your products, via Shopify Catalog, to AI channels including ChatGPT, Microsoft Copilot and Google's AI Mode and Gemini. Shopify says there are no extra transaction fees beyond standard processing. For developers, Shopify also offers Catalog and Checkout MCP servers that implement UCP.
UK status: Shopify says purchasing across all these channels is currently available to US buyers only. UK stores selling to US buyers can take part. When the channels open to UK buyers, Shopify says merchants will be ready by default.
WooCommerce
WooCommerce has native MCP support in developer preview, which lets AI tools read and manage products and orders with proper permissions. For Google, WooCommerce's guidance is that a Merchant Center feed and structured data are the foundation for UCP. For ACP, it points to Stripe for WooCommerce and Stripe's Agentic Commerce Suite, which is rolling out to US businesses first.
OpenCart
I couldn't find any official OpenCart support for UCP or ACP. On OpenCart, agent readiness today means a good Merchant Center feed, proper structured data, and a clean API if you want to go further.
Why it's still worth acting now
If the buying features aren't in the UK yet, why bother?
Because every one of these systems starts from the same place: your product data. Google says the best preparation for UCP is making your Merchant Center data as robust and up-to-date as possible. OpenAI says product feeds give you more control over how your products appear in ChatGPT. Better data also helps you in Google Shopping, free listings and normal search right now.
You're not betting on a future feature. You're fixing things that already cost you sales.
The readiness checklist
1. Product feed and Merchant Center
- Set up Google Merchant Center and submit a product feed, if you haven't already.
- Fill in every key attribute: title, description, link, image, price, availability, brand, GTIN (or MPN where there's no barcode) and condition.
- Add shipping and returns in Merchant Center, not just on your website.
- Fix every warning and disapproval. A product that isn't eligible in Shopping won't be eligible for anything built on top of it.
- Keep it in sync. Price and stock should update automatically, not once a week.
2. Structured data
- Add Product schema with an Offer to every product page. Google's merchant listing guidance requires the product name and offer, with price, currency and availability.
- Include the extras where they apply: GTIN, brand, reviews, shipping details and return policy.
- Make sure it matches what the page shows and what your feed says. Mismatched prices are a common reason for disapprovals.
- Test it with Google's Rich Results Test. If you're checking raw JSON-LD by hand, our free JSON formatter makes it readable.
3. Clean product content
Agents read your product pages like a very literal customer. Help them:
- Write descriptive titles: brand, product type, key attribute, size or colour.
- Put specifications in clear lists or tables, not buried in paragraphs or images.
- Be explicit about compatibility, materials and dimensions.
- State delivery times, costs and returns clearly on the product page.
- Use proper variants for sizes and colours, rather than separate near-duplicate products.
4. Checkout and APIs
- Keep checkout fast and simple. Even where agents hand the customer back to your site, they land on your checkout.
- Support wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay where your payment provider allows it.
- Make sure your platform has a solid API for products, stock, baskets and orders. That's what any agent integration will be built on.
- Know your payment provider's plans. Stripe is central to ACP, so if you're on Stripe, keep an eye on its agentic features.
How it applies to your platform
Shopify. You're in the best position. Agentic Storefronts is switched on automatically for eligible stores, and Shopify Catalog handles the data. Your job is product content quality and making sure your feed and settings are right. See our Shopify development service.
WooCommerce. Use Google for WooCommerce to sync to Merchant Center, check your structured data, and keep Stripe for WooCommerce up to date if you use Stripe. The MCP support is still a developer preview, so I wouldn't rely on it in production yet. See our WooCommerce development service.
OpenCart. There's no built-in route, so it's a build job: a reliable Merchant Center feed, proper Product schema in your theme, and a custom API if you want agents to do more than read your catalogue. That's the kind of work we do on large OpenCart stores. See our OpenCart development and API development services.
FAQ
Is agentic commerce available in the UK yet?
Not for buying. Google's UCP checkout, ChatGPT shopping and Shopify's agent purchasing are currently US-focused. UK shoppers can still use AI assistants to research products, and those assistants rely on the same product data.
Do I need to build anything special right now?
For most UK shops, no. Getting your Merchant Center feed, structured data and product content right is the useful work today. Custom agent integrations make sense later, or now if you sell heavily to US buyers.
Will AI agents replace my website?
Not on current evidence. OpenAI has moved purchases back to merchants' own sites and apps, and Google keeps the retailer as seller of record. Your site and checkout still matter.
Is ChatGPT Instant Checkout still a thing?
OpenAI says it's moving away from a standalone Instant Checkout. Purchases that start in ChatGPT are completed on the merchant's own website or app.
How much does it cost to get a store ready?
It depends on your platform and how much data needs cleaning. Our projects start from £995, and we don't charge VAT. If you'd rather we keep feeds and schema in order month to month, our care plans are £49, £149 or £395 a month.
The bottom line
Agentic commerce is real, but in the UK it's still mostly about discovery. The stores that get recommended will be the ones with complete, accurate, consistent product data.
Fix your feed, fix your schema, and write product content a machine can't misread. If you'd like a second pair of eyes on your store, get in touch, we're happy to take a look.
