How the llms.txt format works
The llms.txt proposal is Markdown, not XML. The H1 is the only required part. After that you may add a blockquote summary, some detail, then H2 sections of links.
Each file-list row is - [name](url), with an optional : note. Links should be absolute http(s) URLs. A section titled Optional is for secondary links that a short-context reader can skip.

Serving llms.txt on OpenCart, Shopify and WordPress
On OpenCart, the default .htaccess file blocks .txt files other than robots.txt, which returns a 403. Allow llms.txt in that rule if the file is on disk.
Shopify can serve /llms.txt automatically. Customise it with an llms.txt.liquid template in the theme.
On WordPress, Yoast SEO can generate the file. Whatever the platform, the file belongs at the host root.

What is llms.txt?
It is a Markdown file at /llms.txt that lists the site name, a short summary, and links to useful pages. The proposal is at llmstxt.org. It is a map of the site, not a search ranking file.
Does Google Search use llms.txt?
No. Google Search says it ignores llms.txt. Do not add the file expecting a ranking change in Google.
Do ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini read other sites’ llms.txt files?
No major AI engine has confirmed that it reads other sites’ llms.txt files. Some products may fetch it in future. Treat any benefit as unconfirmed.
Where does llms.txt go?
At the host root, for example https://www.example.co.uk/llms.txt. Each host needs its own file. www and the apex are different hosts.
Why do I get a 403 on OpenCart?
The default OpenCart .htaccess file blocks .txt files other than robots.txt. Allow llms.txt in that rule if the file is on disk. Shopify can serve the file automatically and you customise it with llms.txt.liquid. On WordPress, Yoast can generate it.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
Paste, typing, file drop and clipboard reads stay in this browser. Fetching a live file is a direct request from your browser to https://{domain}/llms.txt unless you tick Fetch via aamservices.uk, which loads that same path through our server.
How is llms.txt different from robots.txt?
robots.txt asks crawlers which paths they may fetch. llms.txt is a Markdown index of pages you are happy to point a language model at. Use the Robots.txt Tester if you need allow and disallow rules.
